Cleavers are an important factor in achieving low loss fusion splices. Cleavers need to be robust and produce repeatable results in a variety of environmental conditions. A cleaver should produce cleave angles of 1 degree or less from perpendicuar. In addition, cleavers should be easy to maintain allowing quick access to the parts that require cleaning such as gripping pads. The tool should come equipped with integrated bins to hold fibre off cut. The bins should be easy to empty with a high capacity.
The latest cleavers use autorotating blades. After every cleave, the blade automatically rotates to present a fresh part of the blade for the next cleave. This improves the lifetime of the blade and removes the need to manually adjust blades.
