If water penetrates into joints or termination boxes, e.g.
through damage of the cable sheath, imperfect sealing or a defective cable sheath the fibre coating can be affected and fibre microcracks can result. In the long term, this leads to deterioration of the fibre properties or even to an unexpected total loss of signal transmission.

The aquasensor can be inserted into joints and termination boxes and can be used to detect increases in humidity or water ingress. The sensor uses a macrobending effect and clips on to one fibre in the joint. The light passing through the fibre is attenuated depending on the degree of moisture detected.
